Shore Fishing Baltimore, West Cork, Ireland
At Baltimore Beacon: Bottom fishing with fish bait for bull huss, conger and lesser spotted dogfish, Spinning for mackerel and pollack, especially at high tide and in offshore winds, Floatfishing or paternostering with worm or crab for ballan wrasse on the seaward side, between the Beacon and Eastern Hole Bay, reached by a short walk over the rocks on the left of the road, about 200 metres before the Beacon itself. There is a good depth of water, though the bottom is rough. Always take care when fishing from rock marks. Never attempt it if there is a swell running.
At Barlogue Bay near Lough Ine: Spinning for mackerel and small pollack. Floatfishing for mullet and wrasse. Bottom fishing for dogfish, gurnard, conger, ray, etc. Fishing is not permitted on the piers at Lough Hyne.
Ilen River: Grey mullet fishing in the river above the stone bridge - a mile downstream from Skibbereen on the opposite side to the main road. Low water is generally best. The usual method is floatfished bread or floating crust. Groundbait with bread. Mullet may also be caught at other spots from Baltimore Harbour right up the river into Skibbereen itself. Small pieces of fish are an alternative hook bait. Close season for bass: 14th May to 14th June. Sherkin Island: spinning for pollack and mackeral at the mouth of Horseshoe Bay. Flat fish and bass on the beaches. The varied coastline offers several different possibilities for the shore angler.
